Luz Hernandez

Biography

Luz Hernandez is honored to serve as a Rector for the University of Notre Dame. Born and raised in Chicago, Luz has made South Bend her home for many years. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Religious Studies and Spanish from Saint Mary's College and a Master of Divinity from the University of Notre Dame. She began her career as a middle school teacher and director for religious education at St. Matthew's Cathedral in South Bend. When she entered the Master of Divinity program, her ministry placements included serving as a chaplain for a nursing home and rehabilitation center, being an assistant rector, and working for Hispanic Ministry in the local diocese. Luz is dedicated to creating environments where students feel seen, heard, and valued, and where they can explore their faith and personal identity with openness and authenticity. She is excited to lead and collaborate with the university community to achieve excellence and support the holistic development of all students. In her free time, Luz loves to cook, sing karaoke, and watch movies. She especially enjoys cooking meals for people, finding joy in bringing others together over a shared meal.
