Dennis Wieboldt

Biography

Dennis Wieboldt is a doctoral candidate in the Department of History at the University of Notre Dame, where he is a Richard and Peggy Notebaert Premier Fellow in the Graduate School. Dennis, the author of more than 30 academic articles, book reviews, and other essays, covers the areas of constitutional law and legal history, with a particular focus on the First Amendment’s Religion Clauses.

Dennis arrived at Notre Dame in 2023 as the first student to concurrently pursue a J.D./Ph.D. in history. Prior to his time at Notre Dame, he earned his bachelor’s degree summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Boston College. There, he received several undergraduate honors, including the 2022 McCarthy Prize in the Humanities, a distinction conferred upon the best thesis in the humanities by Boston College’s Morrissey College of Arts and Sciences. Following his undergraduate studies, Dennis earned his master’s degree in history from Boston College. In 2026, Dennis earned his J.D. magna cum laude from Notre Dame Law School, where he received the Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Program of Law, Ethics & Public Policy. Dennis was also recognized with the A. Harold Weber Writing Award and the Patricia O’Hara Scholarship and Leadership Award. Dennis has served as an Assistant Rector in Graham Family Hall, on the Executive Council of the American Catholic Historical Association, and on the Advisory Committee of Boston College's Church in the 21st Century Center.
